Silica Gel

Silica gel is a granular, vitreous, highly porous form of silica made synthetically from sodium silicate. Despite its name, silica gel is a solid. It is a naturally occurring mineral that is purified and processed into either granular or beaded form. As a desiccant, it has an average pore size of 24 angstroms and has a strong affinity for water molecules.

Silica gel is most commonly encountered in everyday life as beads packed in a vapor-permeable plastic. In this form, it is used as a desiccant to control local humidity in order to avoid spoilage or degradation of some goods. Because of poisonous dopants (see below) and their very high absorption of moisture, silica gel packets usually bear warnings for the user not to eat the contents. If consumed, the pure silica gel is unlikely to cause acute or chronic illness. Food-grade desiccant should not include any poisons which would cause long-term harm to humans if consumed in the quantities normally included with the items of food.

Dulu masa study kalau buat amali guna silica gel ni amatlah menakutkan kononnya. Maklumlah lecturer asyik dok cakap ianya bahan karsinogen. Takut sangatlah nanti kena kanser. Silica gel ni kita boleh dapati masa beli kasut, handbag atau ubatan sekalipun. Silica gel yang masih kering berwarna biru manakala jika ianya sudah menyerap humidity akan bertukar menjadi warna pink. Kita boleh dapatkan kembali silica gel yang kering dengan proses pengeringan pada 150 celcius.

Ingat lagi mak bawa balik satu plastik besar berisi silica gel dari tempat kerja. Mak nak letak dalam pasu bunga kristal yang masa tu sangat² glamour. Memang setiap rumah mengimpikan satu set bunga kristal. Tapi bila tengok terus cakap kat mak... takut adik makan. Maklumlah masa tu adik bongsu cujie masih kecil lagi. Pantang jumpa benda kecik bersepah takut dia makan paling tidak masukkan kan the tiny little thing ke dalam hidung. Ada kot 2 kali bekejar ke hospital sebab dia masukkan peluru pistol mainan dan pada hari yang lain pula masukkan buah ceri burung tu.

Entry ni saja nak mengimbau betapa syoknya masa zaman study dulu. Suka buat amali... masa buat amali ni macam² magic berlaku tapi yang penting apa yang kita buat hasilnya tetap sama. Rindu nak masuk lab bergaya dengan labcot putih suci. Kerja dalam lab sangat disiplin semua nak tepat. Keadaan dalam lab pun tak semak... tak yah tengok file bertimbun-timbun menggunung. Radas yang paling dirindui... bikar. Tak tau kenapa... rindu nak pegang bikar... tabung uji... kelalang kon. Rindu nak tengok mikrob... membiak-biak atas agar. Pastu tengok bawah mikroskop. Haih rindulah... rindu tahu!
